Video: Savage Rivale shows crazy multi-panel retractable roof for Roadyacht GTS
Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Europe, Technology, Videos, Luxury, MISC
Why don't they make four-door convertibles anymore? Because the roof mechanism would just be too darn big, that's why. But there's at least one company out to change that. And, of course, they're Dutch.
That outfit is Savage Rivale, the braintrust behind the Roadyacht GTS. Rather than a wafting parade car like the Chrysler Phaetons of yore, the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS is more like a four-door Lamborghini Gallardo. With a retracting hard top.
The vehicle is still in the development phase, with the (fixed-roof) race version set to debut next month at the Top Marques show in Monaco. But in the meantime, the Dutch firm has released an animated clip of the Retractable Telescopic Multi Panel (RTMP) roof mechanism it has developed for the Roadyacht with Inalfa Roof Systems.
The mechanism is based around a retractable arm that deploys with the glass panels and then forms the backbone for the structure once in place, with locking mechanisms in the C pillars. It's about as thorough a rethink of the folding roof as the one former Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti created for the Ferrari 575 Superamerica (and later adapted for the Renault Wind and Ferrari 458 Spider), but it's a little hard to imagine, so we'll let the video clip after the jump speak for itself.

Video: Translogic identifies differences of Opel Ampera
Filed under: Hybrid, Europe, Technology, Videos, Hatchback, Chevrolet, Opel, Comparisons
Most gearheads know the Opel Ampera is the European near-twin of the Chevy Volt. There are obvious exterior differences, such as the Ampera's "boomerang" headlights and Opel badging, but inside, the only noticeable difference is another Opel badge on the steering wheel.
Bradley Hasemeyer and the Translogic crew traveled to Germany to find out if the trans-Atlantic differences were more than skin deep. Surprisingly, he found one rather interesting revision.
In the U.S., Volts get three driver-selectable operating modes. We get Normal, Sport and Mountain modes. But German Amperas get a fourth mode: Halten mode. When cruising the Autobahn, drivers can restrict the use of the Ampera's battery and run only on the small, fuel-efficient engine. Once back on surface streets, they can turn loose the battery and bask in bank-account-boosting, ridiculously good, low-cost electric motor cruising.
Why don't we get Halten mode in the U.S.? Well, the obvious reason is probably that most Americans don't speak German. Beyond that, though, Hasemeyer can only guess that government regulations might hold back implementation here. The again, maybe General Motors just likes Germans more.
Watch the video after the jump.

Fontana Tough to Watch but NASCAR Drivers Love to Race: Fan Opinion (Yahoo! Contributor Network)
NASCAR Sprint Cup returns to the West Coast to race the two-mile Auto Club Speedway in Fontana March 25. Fontana is a double-edged sword for NASCAR. The track is a favorite for drivers because it is smooth, wide and racy but for fans it is a long, drawn out race that usually ends...

Report: How European Central Bank loans may have subsidized the Volkswagen Up!
Filed under: Car Buying, Budget, Europe, Hatchback, Volkswagen, Earnings/Financials
The New York Times reports the European Central Bank may have inadvertently helped buyers looking to take home a new Volkswagen Up! secure low-interest loans. Volkswagen Financial Services was one of many institutions that took advantage of the €1 trillion the central bank set aside to be loaned out at just one percent interest. Volkswagen borrowed €2 billion (about $2.6 billion USD) of that money, and plans to offer the cash to buyers in the form of loans with low three to four percent interest. While the goal of the low-interest loans was originally to stabilize uncertain markets, automakers and other industries are taking advantage of the effectively free cash.
Mercedes Bank has already taken advantage of the generous terms, and PSA Financing, a unit of Peugeot and Citroën, has made mention of doing the same in an attempt to stave off looming poor sales. According to The New York Times, the European auto industry may be facing down its second downturn since 2009. Registrations for new vehicles were down 8.3 percent between January and February of this year compared to the same period in 2011.

Video: Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts
Ah, donuts - one of the automotive world's purest forms of hooliganism. We've all done 'em, simply because every once in a while, it's just plain fun to light up a car's back end and fling it around in a circle.
Fun as they may be, donuts aren't necessarily all that fun to watch. After all, one car spinning in circles certainly loses its charm after a while. But what about seventy cars spinning in smoke-filled circles? Now that's something.
Earlier this week, over 70 vehicles showed up at Infineon Raceway in order to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of cars performing donuts successfully. Check out what ensued in the video after the break, complete with epic battle background music.
