Mazda CX-5 caught with less camo
Filed under: Frankfurt Motor Show, Spy Photos, Crossover, Mazda
When it enters production, the CX-5 will replace the Tribute CUV in Mazda's lineup. The Tribute is simply a rebadged version of the Ford Escape, and since the Blue Oval is prepping its new Vertrek-based global crossover to replace the Escape (and Kuga overseas), the Tribute will simply go the way of the dodo.
Look for the production version of the CX-5 to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

100-year-old NASCAR fan tackles the track, lives to see 101
Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Videos
We're not the biggest NASCAR fans in the world, but we can't think of a much better way to celebrate a 100th birthday than with a few laps around New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Rachel Gilbert, a NASCAR follower since the 1960s, took five live laps around the speedway in a Toyota Camry pace car. Ms. Gilbert, we salute you.
The great grandmother of nine never passed 50 miles per hour, but she seemed pretty darn pleased with her shot at NASCAR glory. The good people at the speedway also gave Gilbert VIP tickets to the July Spring Cup and a shirt signed by Carl Edwards. Hit the jump to watch video of Gilbert as she cruises around NHMS.

Ford's EcoBoost V6 accounts for 36% of all F-150 sales
When gas prices hit $4 per gallon in the past, pickup sales suffered as a result. We have to wait until April sales are released to know how much truck sales have been hurt by the latest spike at the pump, but it's clear that the Ford F-150 is getting a big boost from its turbocharged V6.
Automotive News reports that 36 percent of all F-150s are equipped with the optional EcoBoost V6, which costs between $750 and $1,750 depending on the model. What's more, the EcoBoost model is reportedly accounting for 40 percent of all F-150 orders, and there is currently a scant 13-day supply of the boosted trucks.
Traditionally, full-size truck buyers have been more inclined to opt for larger V8 engines, but the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 appears to have changed some minds. The mill's V8-like 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque means that capability won't be compromised, while fuel economy rises by up to 20 percent. The Environmental Protection Agency gave the boosted F-150 a 16 mile per gallon city rating and a 22 mpg rating in highway driving.
At the same time, Ford claims a maximum tow rating of 11,300 pounds with an EcoBoost-equipped F-150, depending on the model configuration. For comparison's sake, F-150s that come with the 411-hp, 6.2-liter V8 can also tow 11,300 pounds, but fuel economy tops out at only 18 mpg in highway driving.
With the EcoBoost F-150 off to a rousing start, the next big question is whether the boosted V6 has staying power in the event gas prices drop back down to more normal levels. We'll have to wait and see, but with power and capability that matches other trucks in the F-150 lineup and a significant fuel economy savings, we can't see why not.

Chrysler reportedly cancels plans to bring rebadged Lancia Ypsilon, Delta to North America
Filed under: Hatchback, Chrysler, Luxury, Lancia
When Lancia launched the new Ypsilon at the Geneva Motor Show early last month, it joined its sister-companies' Fiat 500 and Alfa Romeo MiTo in the Italian auto group's premium hatchback line-up. But while the model is being sold as a Chrysler in the British Isles, plans to bring it over to North America have reportedly been canceled. Apparently the planned launch of the Chrysler Ypsilon in the States was feared to edge in on the recently launched American-market Fiat 500 too closely and potentially cannibalize sales for the retro hatch.
The report goes on to indicate that similar plans to market the larger Lancia Delta in North America have likewise been shelved. The Delta was brought to 2010 Detroit Auto Show wearing Chrysler's winged badge, sparking discussions over whether the lackluster Golf-sized hatchback could make a dent in the North American market, but the case for the badge-engineering exercise was apparently a non-starter.
The inverse, however, remains to be seen, as Chrysler models like the 200 sedan and convertible, the 300 sedan and the Town & Country minivan are being marketed in Europe as Lancias.

Autowriters Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer added to The Car Show on SPEED
Filed under: Etc., Celebrities
SPEED is betting big on its newest TV series, called The Car Show. You're most likely already aware that the program will be hosted by Adam Carolla, Dan Neil, Matt Farah and John Salley. Now, SPEED has announced that some well-known auto scribes are joining the team to pitch in on writing duty.
Aaron Robinson and Ezra Dyer have become a part of The Car Show family. Robinson is the Technical Editor at Car and Driver, while Dyer has written for a handful of publications and has a running column at Automobile. The two will add their automotive knowledge and insight to a team that already knows a good deal about cars. Well, we're sure of everyone except Salley. The Spider owns four NBA championship rings, was a member of the Chicago Bulls record-breaking 72-win season, and wasn't terrible in the film Eddie. None of that translates to cars, but we're hoping the writers stay away from attempting to squeeze his six-foot, 11-inch frame into a Mazda Miata.

Report: F1 driver Kubica released from hospital
Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Celebrities, Skoda, Racing
Robert Kubica has finally been released from hospital following his terrifying February rally crash. In case you forgot, Kubica hit an Armco barrier, which punctured the cockpit of his Skoda Fabia S2000, nearly severing off his hand and casting doubt on the future of his driving career.
Kubica's release is an important step in his overall recovery, but hardly means the Polish Formula One ace will be back in the cockpit any time soon. According to doctors, his recovery is moving along apace, but he still has seriously limited use of the injured appendage. The main concern is the extensive nerve damage Kubica's crash caused in the affected limb. How long the nerves will take to right themselves is anyone's guess.
For now, Kubica will spend some time at home in Monaco before going back to Italy to start a long and extensive rehab program. It may be months or even years before the full implications of the crash on the 26-year-old Pole's F1 driving career are known, but we're glad to hear he's out of the hospital and on to the next stage in his recovery.

Report: Honda NSX development soldiers on
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Etc., Japan, Honda, Rumormill
Automotive News reports that the long-dead NSX is back under development after its spiritual successor was sent to the round file in 2008. We've heard an increasing chorus of rumors that the project has been taken off the shelf, but this is the first time we can recall reading direct quotes from higher-ups within Honda confirming its existence. Takanobu Ito, Honda's President, reportedly disclosed that his company is currently working on a successor that will be both entertaining to drive and efficient, which likely means buyers can expect to be met with a hybrid drivetrain when the supercar launches. When will that be? Ito didn't give specific details on when the new-generation NSX will land, though he did say that the racer will be the brawnier bigger brother of the company's CR-Z hybrid.
That means that we can kiss the luscious V10 mounted in the old HSV-010 goodbye. That vehicle was intended to be the most recent take on the NSX, but was scrapped after the auto market at large began circling the drain back in 2008. While fans of the Japanese supercar were up in arms over the fact that the HSV-010 abandoned the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive finesse of the original NSX for an all-wheel drive platform, we have to imagine many NSX loyalists might not have kind words for a hybridized version of the bruiser.

Video: Crazy Russian commuter's parking job
Parking can be the toughest part of any commute, unless of course you've gone to the Ken Block School of Parallel Precision. Beyond the jump is a very short clip a Russian driver who didn't have time to turn around and park like the rest of us, so (we're guessing) he jammed the parking brake at speed, spun 180 degrees and landed right where he needed to be.
This clip isn't exactly new, but it's new to us. Hit the jump to check it out. Thanks for the tip, Matt!
PS: Anyone else wonder if the driver might be related to this guy?
