Report: Kia Optima Hybrid delayed due to Hyundai Sonata Hybrid pushback

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid was supposed to go on sale in December, but at the eleventh hour, the company decided on a last-minute engineering change to enhance safety. When the automaker learned that President Obama planned to sign a bill that would ban a switch that can disable a noisemaker designed to warn blind pedestrians, the Korean automaker decided it was best to remove the switch. The move delayed mass availability of the Sonata Hybrid from December to late April.
But what about its twin, the Kia Optima Hybrid? Ward's Automotive reports that the mid-size hybrid has been delayed until late in the second quarter, or about five months after its scheduled January launch.
Will the substantial delay of the Optima and Sonata Hybrids hurt sales and satisfaction? We're sure there are probably some impatient buyers out there who don't understand why they have to wait, but in the long run, we're likely looking at a mere bump in the road.

Hispania duo not allowed to race
Vitantonio Liuzzi and Narain Karthikeyan will not be allowed to race in the Australian Grand Prix after the FIA refused a request from HRT to let them race. Neither driver managed to get within 107 per cent of Sebastian Vettel's fastest time from Q1, which meant they did not officially qualify. Sebastien Loeb accused Mikko Hirvonen of deliberately delaying him when the Ford rejoined after changing a puncture on SS9 in Portugal. Report: Jury selection underway for Toyota unintended acceleration case

According to a new Bloomberg report, jury selection has commenced in a lawsuit against Toyota stemming from the unintended acceleration debacle. Amir Sitafalwalla sued Toyota in 2008, claiming that his 2005 Scion accelerated uncontrollably and only stopped when he hit a tree.
This is the first unintended acceleration case to reach trial after Toyota recalled millions of vehicles in 2009 to fix the unintended acceleration. Sitafalwalla's case goes to trial in Central Islip, Long Island later this month.

Ford to outsell GM in March?

March sales don't end until Thursday evening, but an Edmunds sales forecast suggests that Ford could beat General Motors in sales for the first time since February, 2010. The Blue Oval is projected to sell 210,000 vehicles for the month, up 34 percent from February figures. Edmunds sees GM having a solid month as well, but the crystal ball sees 208,000 sales for The General, up less than one percent from February sales.
One reason for GM's sales slump is a reduction in incentives from February levels, as the Detroit, MI-based automaker slashed incentives by an average of $700 per vehicle. That sounds like a massive drop in rebates, but keep in mind that GM was the industry leader in incentive spending for the first two months of the year. Meanwhile, Ford bumped up spending by a reported $84 per vehicle, mostly due to an effort to clear last-generation Focus sales as the 2012 models begin heading into dealerships.
Edmunds also sees a big March for the rest of the industry, with Toyota expected to move 181,000 units, followed by 135,000 vehicles for Honda, 117,000 for Nissan and 112,000 for Chrysler. Don't forget that these are merely projections for March numbers, and anything can happen between now and Friday.
Edmunds also mentions that sales dropped off as March wore on, as the Japan disaster, international conflicts and high gas prices began to wear on sales. Stay tuned to Autoblog for our official By The Numbers post as the figures roll in.

Gavin creates his own marathon
Oliver Gavin will run a marathon of his own in Long Beach as he cannot take part in this year's London Marathon due to the clashing American Le Mans Series race on the Californian street track. The Corvette racer was the best-placed of the group of British Racing Drivers' Club drivers who contested last year's London Marathon in aid of CLIC Sargent children's cancer charity.

Contest seeks to redesign Tron light cycle

We'll be the first to admit that we went full geek over Tron: Legacy, and gaming website SideQuesting.com is showing its enthusiasm for the franchise by running a contest to reimagine the famous light cycle. Disney's reworked battle bikes for Legacy were brilliant, but SQ wants to see exactly what designers cruising the web can come up with on their own. There's a hitch, though: Artists are supposed to spend no longer than two hours on each submission.
Each design will be featured at SideQuesting.com, and winners will receive cool prizes including an Art of Tron: Legacy book, a white light cycle figurine and a deluxe light cycle figurine. SlideQuesting says that the total value of all the swag is around $75.

Nationwide, motorists are shelling out an average of $3.55 per gallon of petrol. That's a lot more cash than you were paying last year at this time, but - stop us if you've heard this one before - an interesting graphic from Good shows that gas is a real bargain compared to other liquids we consume every day.
For example, a gallon of freshly brewed coffee from Starbucks will set you back $32. Move up from coffee to Guinness and you're looking at doubling your tally to $64 for every 128 ounces consumed. We know you won't be shocked that Dom Perignon is $755 per gallon, but did you know that nail polish is $1,015 for the same portion size? If you want a consumable with comparable per-gallon pricing, you'll have to pick up some Coca-Cola, which retails for $3.84 per gallon.
Okay, so you probably don't feel any better about gas prices (we sure don't), but you click on the image above to see how other items you use every day compare to the price of a gallon of gas.

Jakes secures full-time Coyne seat
James Jakes has landed a full-time drive in the IndyCar Series with Dale Coyne Racing for this year. Mercedes-Benz to launch teen driving school

"Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz". Janice Joplin's words may seem entertaining to some, but strikingly familiar to anyone who's gone through the ordeal of ushering their teenager into the world of driving. While most parents wouldn't consider buying their teen a Mercedes as a first car - at least, not a new one - the automaker is offering the next best thing. And in many ways, it's even better.
Armed with statistics of teenage driving accidents and the success of a similar program in the UK, Mercedes-Benz USA is preparing to launch its own teen driving school right here in the United States. The program is aimed at turning new drivers into safer drivers through an advanced curriculum that goes over and above what's mandated by the state in order to fulfill the basic requirements for a driver's license. Going even further, the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is negotiating with local DMVs across the country over integrating its program with the existing mandatory process to create an all-encompassing program.
If it achieves the same goals as it has in the UK, opening an advanced driving school for teens in America strikes us as one of the best safety features Mercedes-Benz has come up with yet. For the company that pioneered ABS brakes, crumple zones, stability control, brake assist and traction control, that's no mean feat. Details in the press release after the jump.
