Citroen sure running first will be best

Citroen team principal Yves Matton has explained Citroen's decision to run first on the road on Rally of Portugal, stating that the fear of his drivers dropping time in the dust outweighed the potential for the road cleaning. Mikko Hirvonen will open the road tomorrow evening, with World Rally Championship leader Sebastien Loeb directly behind him in the sister DS3 WRC.

Ford, Citroen split on running order

Ford and Citroen have taken totally opposing decisions regarding the running order for tomorrow night's opening loop of Rally of Portugal stages, with the factory Fiestas at the back of the pack and the DS3s at the front. Jari-Matti Latvala was first to select his position on the road, courtesy of his fastest time on the qualifying stage this morning. The Finn confirmed Ford's strategy by picking 17th on the road

RBR: Understanding tyres key to pace

Red Bull believes that getting a better understanding of Pirelli's tyres will be just as important to its title hopes as improving its car. On the back of Ferrari and Sauber delivering a shock result in the Malaysian Grand Prix, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner says that his squad needs to be able to extract more from the 2012 tyres if it is to deliver the consistent results that will ensure the championship.

Alonso: Sepang win changes nothing

Fernando Alonso said his shock Malaysian Grand Prix victory "changes nothing" and that Ferrari still faces a huge amount of work to be fully competitive in normal circumstances. Alonso came through from eighth on the grid to beat Sauber's Sergio Perez to victory in the rain-affected Sepang race. While delighted with the result, Alonso underlined that it did not mean Ferrari had conquered its problems.

Video: Savage Rivale shows crazy multi-panel retractable roof for Roadyacht GTS

Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS

Why don't they make four-door convertibles anymore? Because the roof mechanism would just be too darn big, that's why. But there's at least one company out to change that. And, of course, they're Dutch.

That outfit is Savage Rivale, the braintrust behind the Roadyacht GTS. Rather than a wafting parade car like the Chrysler Phaetons of yore, the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS is more like a four-door Lamborghini Gallardo. With a retracting hard top.

The vehicle is still in the development phase, with the (fixed-roof) race version set to debut next month at the Top Marques show in Monaco. But in the meantime, the Dutch firm has released an animated clip of the Retractable Telescopic Multi Panel (RTMP) roof mechanism it has developed for the Roadyacht with Inalfa Roof Systems.

The mechanism is based around a retractable arm that deploys with the glass panels and then forms the backbone for the structure once in place, with locking mechanisms in the C pillars. It's about as thorough a rethink of the folding roof as the one former Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti created for the Ferrari 575 Superamerica (and later adapted for the Renault Wind and Ferrari 458 Spider), but it's a little hard to imagine, so we'll let the video clip after the jump speak for itself.

Raikkonen: Lotus has front-row pace

Kimi Raikkonen believes his Lotus had the potential to be inside the top two in qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, had not made a mistake on his Q3 flying lap at Sepang. Raikkonen will start from 10th on the grid in Sunday's race after the team was forced to change his car's gearbox, but Raikkonen believes his pace was good enough to contend for pole; on paper, at least

Video: Translogic identifies differences of Opel Ampera

2012 Opel Ampera

Most gearheads know the Opel Ampera is the European near-twin of the Chevy Volt. There are obvious exterior differences, such as the Ampera's "boomerang" headlights and Opel badging, but inside, the only noticeable difference is another Opel badge on the steering wheel.

Bradley Hasemeyer and the Translogic crew traveled to Germany to find out if the trans-Atlantic differences were more than skin deep. Surprisingly, he found one rather interesting revision.

In the U.S., Volts get three driver-selectable operating modes. We get Normal, Sport and Mountain modes. But German Amperas get a fourth mode: Halten mode. When cruising the Autobahn, drivers can restrict the use of the Ampera's battery and run only on the small, fuel-efficient engine. Once back on surface streets, they can turn loose the battery and bask in bank-account-boosting, ridiculously good, low-cost electric motor cruising.

Why don't we get Halten mode in the U.S.? Well, the obvious reason is probably that most Americans don't speak German. Beyond that, though, Hasemeyer can only guess that government regulations might hold back implementation here. The again, maybe General Motors just likes Germans more.

Watch the video after the jump.

Young driver test could be in Britain

Formula 1 teams are weighing up the idea of running this year's young driver test at Silverstone in the week after the British Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned. The annual three-day run has taken place for the past two years, and is a chance for teams to try out young talent that would not otherwise get the opportunity to drive F1 machinery. Although the original idea was for the test to take place at the end of the season, as it did in 2010, last year it happened after the penultimate event in Abu Dhabi because teams did not want to stay on in Brazil after the finale.

Remembering the Roots of Being a Motorsport Fan

For the past seven years I’ve worked in the motorsport industry as a reporter, and in that time, I’ve enjoyed the comforts of free coffee, clean toilets and air conditioned media centres at circuits all over the world. As a result, I (and I feel my peers), have lost touch with what it’s like to actually be a race fan. Certainly, working in media means getting up-to-the-minute information and news that is digested, then delivered to race fans in a coherent manner; but it also means, losing the essence of what being a follower of motorsport is all about. Let’s not forget, it’s the paying fans who help to bring the money into the sport, via entry fees and sundry purchases, plus they are the key component of bringing a [...]

Barrichello hopes for improvements

Rubens Barrichello is hoping to find some overnight improvements after a combination of mechanical and handling problems left him outside the top 20 in both of Friday's practice sessions for the IndyCar season-opener at St Petersburg. The Brazilian struggled to recover after losing track time to a still-unidentified mechanical problem in the opening session, and said that his lack of familiarity with both the car and the nuances of the circuit made it hard for him to close the gap. "I was going to play catch-up already just by learning the circuit," Barrichello said.

Fernando Alonso suffered a KERS failure in the final part of qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix, but the Ferrari driver does not believe it cost him any places on the grid. Report: How European Central Bank loans may have subsidized the Volkswagen Up!

2012 Volkswagen Up!

The New York Times reports the European Central Bank may have inadvertently helped buyers looking to take home a new Volkswagen Up! secure low-interest loans. Volkswagen Financial Services was one of many institutions that took advantage of the €1 trillion the central bank set aside to be loaned out at just one percent interest. Volkswagen borrowed €2 billion (about $2.6 billion USD) of that money, and plans to offer the cash to buyers in the form of loans with low three to four percent interest. While the goal of the low-interest loans was originally to stabilize uncertain markets, automakers and other industries are taking advantage of the effectively free cash.

Mercedes Bank has already taken advantage of the generous terms, and PSA Financing, a unit of Peugeot and Citroën, has made mention of doing the same in an attempt to stave off looming poor sales. According to The New York Times, the European auto industry may be facing down its second downturn since 2009. Registrations for new vehicles were down 8.3 percent between January and February of this year compared to the same period in 2011.

Video: Guinness Book of World Records spin-off shows it's time to make the donuts

Ah, donuts - one of the automotive world's purest forms of hooliganism. We've all done 'em, simply because every once in a while, it's just plain fun to light up a car's back end and fling it around in a circle.

Fun as they may be, donuts aren't necessarily all that fun to watch. After all, one car spinning in circles certainly loses its charm after a while. But what about seventy cars spinning in smoke-filled circles? Now that's something.

Earlier this week, over 70 vehicles showed up at Infineon Raceway in order to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of cars performing donuts successfully. Check out what ensued in the video after the break, complete with epic battle background music.

Sauber not expecting to lose Perez

Sauber is not concerned about fresh speculation linking its driver Sergio Perez with a move to Ferrari - perhaps as soon as this year. With Felipe Massa's early-season struggles already placing question marks about his future, and Perez being part of Ferrari's young driver programme, it is logical to suggest that the Mexican would be a target if the Italian team decided it needed to change its drivers.
