Rumor Mill: City Collecting Data for Car-Free Central Park?

Central Park advocate Ken Coughlin tells us he’s spotted a traffic counting strip on the park loop, near Tavern on the Green.
The theory is that the city is gathering traffic data this summer as a baseline for a car-free park trial next year. That would jibe with recent remarks from Mayor Bloomberg and references to [...]

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series

The only Black Series type of treatment that really grabbed and wrung out our hearts and minds so far was the ultra-hot CLK DTM AMG back in 2005, which - technically - was pre-Black Series. Fine. All the Black Series models that came after should have been more hardcore instead of the mildly up-done aesthetic exercises versus their standard AMG-badged counterparts.

Then, we got our first glimpse at the newest Black Series hotness during our recent drive day in southern France with the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG lineup. It's the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series - the most powerful Vitamin C ever from Stuttgart and Affalterbach - that will do all it can to make us forget about our holy experiences in the BMW M3 GTS and Audi Quattro concept. Tough acts to follow, Herr Daimler.

Followup: Futurliner auction a bust on eBay

GM Futurliner

One of the last remaining General Motors Futurliner busses failed to live up to expectations at auction. Bidding on the restored machine started at $500,000, but after a week on eBay Motors, bidders had only managed to turn the volume up to $505,600. That's a tall stack of cash, but still well below the owners' reserve and under the estimates that said the Futurliner would fetch into the millions of dollars. Of the 12 original busses, only a handful remain, and one example recently brought home $4.1 million at Barrett-Jackson.

This auction was supposed to break all previous eBay Motors records.

What kept this particular piece of history from drawing similar money? It's difficult to tell. Maybe the previous auction was over-inflated or maybe there are only so many collectors out there with the means to care for a 33-foot long, 12-foot-tall beast of this nature. Perhaps part of the high-stakes bidding fun is being there live with the cameras rolling.

At this point, it's unclear whether the owners will hold onto their Futurliner for a little longer or if we'll see it under the gavel one more time.

Approximately 8,359 examples of the stylish two-door were built from 1971 through 1975. The car's fuel-injected 3.0-liter inline six produced 200 horsepower, enough giddyup to propel the CSi down the road at 140 miles per hour. Click past the jump for a closer look at this BMW icon.

Study: Kids safer with grandparents driving than parents

Filed under:

Elderly driver

According to a new study, children who ride with their grandparents are half as likely to be injured in an accident as those who ride with their parents. The news comes from research organized by Dr. Fred Henretig, an emergency medicine specialist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Henretig and his team poured through the State Farm data from insurance claims between 2003 and 2007 across 15 states. The research included information on over 12,000 children below the age of 15, and the study interviewed drivers involved in the accidents.

While older drivers are typically more prone to get into an automobile accident and may not always follow proper installation instructions on child booster seats, younger passengers are still less likely to be injured in an accident with their grandparents. The researchers aren't entirely sure why this is, though Henretig says that it may have something to do with the fact that grandparents are more careful drivers with their grandchildren in the vehicle.

McLaren hopes to lead fight against RBR

McLaren is confident that F1's adoption of pre-Silverstone diffuser regulations will allow it to once again lead the fight against Red Bull on the weekend. Managing Director Jonathan Neale said the change of regulations at Silverstone had hit the Woking squad harder than either Red Bull or Ferrari, but promised his team would once again be in contention at the Nurburgring. "When you look at Silverstone, the impact of the engine regulations and rules cost us more than both Ferrari and Red Bull - and that is a matter of fact, not opinion," Neale declared during a Vodafone phone-in on Wednesday.

Porsche Consulting sets up shop in Atlanta

Porsche Consulting HQ

Say what you will about its car design, or the horizontal integration of four-door sedans and big bustling SUVs into its sportscar line-up. But Porsche, push comes to shove, knows efficiency. And we're not talking about miles-per-gallon here. We're talking about corporate management and the license to virtually print money.

In fact other companies - both from within the automotive industry and from outside - look to Porsche to offer advice on how they can streamline their operations as well. That's what prompted the establishment of Porsche Consulting in 1994.

Over the past five years, Porsche Consulting has made some $20 million in the United States alone, even though it has no offices here. With that much business to serve, it should come as no surprise that the subsidiary is setting up shop in America.

Following the establishment of similar offices in Italy and Brazil, the U.S. office of Porsche Consulting will be based out of Porsche's North American headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, with a small staff of ten to start out with. Follow the jump for the full press release.

Ecclestone: Channel 5 an F1 option

Bernie Ecclestone has said that he would likely approach Channel 5 first if the BBC elects not to extend it deal to cover Formula 1. The BBC's current contract to broadcast grand prix racing finishes at the end of 2012, and there has been speculation that budget cuts at the company could make it unable to commit beyond then - or even exit its contract a year early. Ecclestone told The Sunday Telegraph that he hoped the BBC would choose to continue covering the sport - but admitted there were other options if it did not happen.

Volkswagen Touareg on the Pan American Highway

Volkswagen can now lay claim to another world record thanks to the efforts of off-road driver Rainer Zietlow and his team of adventurers. The crew packed into a Volkswagen Touareg TDI and covered the entire span of the Pan-American Highway from start to finish in 11 days, 17 hours and 22 minutes. The trip covered 14 countries and 16,000 miles of near non-stop driving. TÜV NORD Mobility verified the time, which beat out the previous record holder by a full three days.

The journey began on July 2 in the southernmost portion of Argentina and clipped through a variety of challenging conditions. The team faced a sandstorm in Chile and treacherous muddy roads in Alaska, but preplanned fuel stops helped cut the team's time down as much as possible.

Zietlow and his teammates also played a bit of a philanthropic role by donating 10 cents for every kilometer traveled to two Latin American villages to help combat childhood poverty. Hit the jump for the video and full press release.

Gooden Plenty II

Editor’s Note: Wyatt Gooden has enjoyed great success racing sedans in both the real and virtual worlds. As winner of the iRacing.com VW Jetta TDi Cup series in 2008, the young Ohioan earned an iRacing.com-sponsored ride in the 2009 SCCA Pro Racing VW Jetta TDi Cup. After a rough first outing,Gooden rebounded to score a pair of wins and capture the series rookie of the year honors. Earlier this month, Wyatt turned his attention to open wheels, making his debut in the SCCA F1600 Formula F Championship at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Quantum Racing?s Honda Fit-powered Van Diemen with support from iRacing.com 2.0 and Starting Grid. Things went pretty well, as Wyatt explains . . . The schedule was rather unusual as everything started late in the afternoon. [...]

McLeod?s Mojo returns at Mosport.

Defending iRacing V8 Supercar Season One champ Mitchell McLeod will not go quietly, despite his Season Two not going to as much to plan as he would have liked. At Canada’s Mosport Park, he came out fighting and the McLeod magic returned. After a reasonable start to the online racing season including a win at Watkins, disappointments at Sebring and Zandvoort blotted McLeod’s copybook. His season steadied with consecutive thirds at Road Atlanta and VIR behind the seemingly unstoppable Madison Down and Rens Broekman. At Mosport for Round 11, McLeod poled by barely four-hundredths from Down and Broekman. But, a pole is a pole! The usual suspects filled out another packed grid of 25 with some top-split first timers or returnees such as Wayne Tolley, Lewis Dodimead and Jay Boving [...]

Poulsen gets grid penalty

Kristian Poulsen has been given a five-place grid penalty for the next round of the World Touring Car Championship at Oschersleben after causing a collision with Norbert Michelisz in race two at Donington Park. Race stewards decided that the Engstler BMW driver was guilty of spinning around Michelisz's similar Zengo-Dension car at Goddard's before the pair then collided head-on. Poulsen was not the only driver punished at Donington; former world champion Gabriele Tarquini was reprimanded for making contact with Colin Turkington in both races while Yvan Muller was given a suspended grid penalty after hitting his Chevrolet team-mate Rob Huff in race two.
