An ox is a domesticated bovine whose primary purpose is to pull heavy loads. Tipping the scales at more than a ton, the hefty animals are not considered quick workers, especially when compared to horses, but they're steadfast in their actions and respond well to trained commands. Rarely spooked or unsettled, oxen deliver a long, dependable and rather unassuming service life.

Toyota's Land Cruiser is the ox's four-wheeled equivalent. While the full-size sport utility vehicle is one of the automaker's slowest-selling vehicles on U.S. shores - and one of its most expensive - those who've owned one tend to become very loyal fans. We recently spent a week with the current "200 Series," the latest generation of the venerable 'ute that has been in production since the 1950s. What has given the Land Cruiser such longevity and how does it compare to the Lexus LX570, its nearly identical twin? Most importantly, did we become loyal Land Cruiser devotees in the process?

Teams back 2014 engine plan

Formula 1 technical chiefs have given their formal backing to plans for 1.6-litre V6 engines to be used from 2014, but have requested that the new power-units rev higher than originally suggested. During a get-together of technical figures in the Valencia paddock on Sunday morning, the representatives agreed with the new engine plans that were approved by the Formula 1 Commission last week. Such approval from the teams was necessary as part of the official process required for new regulations to be put in place - with the FIA keen to get the matter sorted by the end of this month

Sebastian Vettel insists he is not looking at the championship table yet, despite his huge advantage after his victory in Valencia. Vinales wins rain-shortened race

Maverick Vinales scored the second win of his 125cc career in a rain-truncated race at Assen, which championship leader Nico Terol had to sit out due to hand injuries sustained on Saturday. Aspar rider Terol was unable to take up his eighth place on the grid as he required surgery after crashing in both morning practice and qualifying yesterday, giving his rivals a golden opportunity to carve a chunk from the hitherto dominant Spaniard's points lead. Although the race was declared officially dry, drizzle began falling from the early stages

FIA: Mapping changes will cost 0.5s

Formula 1's top teams could be hurt by up to half a second per lap in qualifying due to the clampdown on engine mapping imposed at this weekend's European Grand Prix, reckons the FIA. With teams bracing themselves for a major change in the way they use blown diffusers over the next two races, FIA race director Charlie Whiting believes the first step in Valencia this weekend may well have an effect on the competitiveness of some teams. "I think it is impossible for us to quantify it, but I have heard during discussions that the most extreme maps may give you half a second per lap," explained Whiting

Greenpeace parody of VW's Little Vader ad
Greenpeace fights the dark side - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Greenpeace has launched a parody of the Volkswagen Little Vader Super Bowl commercial. This time, the pint-sized Sith squares off against various heroes of the Rebel Alliance, including kid-form versions of Chewbacca, C-3PO, R2-D2, Princess Leia and a Jedi Knight. There's even a tiny Lando Calrissian.

Why the neighborhood throw down? According to Greenpeace, Volkswagen is opposing European legislation that would impose further limits on the amount of C02 that new vehicles are allowed to emit. The video then draws an easy parallel between VW and the Evil Empire, complete with a looming VW-badged Death Star.

If you want to watch Episode II, you'll need to sign up on the Greenpeace website. The organization will e-mail the head honchos at Volkswagen on your behalf to decry their actions, so make sure you mean it. As of the time of writing, around 21,441 "rebels" have joined the cause to watch the second video. Hit the jump to check out Episode I for yourself, and head over to the Greenpeace site for more information.

Skoda driver Freddy Loix edged further away from the field on Saturday's first loop of Ypres Rally stages, stretching his lead over Guy Wilks to 46.9 seconds after SS9. Although this looked wise as Wilks finally interrupted Loix's run of stage wins on SS7, the Briton was only 0.4s faster than his Belgian rival - who then resumed his run of fastest times on the next two tests

2011 24 hours of Nrburgring: Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 punished with restriction

911 GT3 Hybrid
Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid - Click above for high-res image gallery

After leading the 2011 24 Hours of Nürburgring race for eight hours last year, the Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid was forced to retire after its combustion engine's valve spring failed less than two hours before the race's conclusion. This year, the team returned with a revised hybrid system that weighs about 20 percent less and delivers about 40 more horsepower. It proved very competitive, as the GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 won the VLN race at this circuit just three weeks ago.

As a result, and with just over a week before the famed 24-hour Nürburgring event, organizers chose to slap an air intake restrictor on the combustion engine, knocking it down to 448 horsepower (last year's engine was rated 480). Calculated over one lap, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid 2.0 now delivers a lower system output than last year's vehicle with a combustion engine, says Porsche.

The team and drivers are understandably frustrated with this last-minute ruling. Not only does it reduce top speed on the straights, but it forces to drivers to push the the hybrid powertrain much harder just to stay competitive. With the handicap, the GT3 R Hybrid qualified 18th. "This further reduction in performance by the organizers is incomprehensible to us," says Porsche Head of Motorsport, Hartmut Kristen. "There are no data from the two test races as part of the 2011 Nürburgring Long Distance Championship that would provide the basis for such a grading."

The 39th edition of the Nürburgring 24 hour race starts on Saturday June at 4:00 PM CET (10:00 AM EDT).

Settling the Mid- vs. Rear-Engine Debate: Porsche Cayman R vs. 911 GT3

Rear or Middle: Where Do You Want It? This is where we venture beyond customary performance tests to decipher two of car enthusiasm?s enduring mysteries: Does spotting the engine in the optimum location?in the middle of the car?yield demonstrably better handling? And can engineering theory trounce painstaking practice? Keep Reading: The Mid- vs. Rear-Engine Debate: [...]

Tilting Dynamometers Explained ? Tech Dept.

Tilting at pinned mills: Angled rigs stress-test engines for the skidpad and the racetrack. If you?ve ever driven around with a hot cup of joe, you?ve seen the coffee slosh as you corner, accelerate, and brake. The 40-weight in the engine?s oil pan and the fluid in the transmission do the same thing. But you [...]

Spies sure pole was achievable

Ben Spies said he was very satisfied with his qualifying breakthrough at Assen, though he was sure he could have been on pole position had he not backed off when Loris Capirossi crashed. For the first time since joining the works Yamaha team for 2011, Spies outqualified his world champion team-mate Jorge Lorenzo and put his bike on the front row of the grid. "It's great to be on the front row for Yamaha at this special event.

What you missed on 6.24.11

Quick Spin: 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder

After a day of driving the 911 Turbo S Edition 918 Spyder on good roads all around Stuttgart's farm country and blasting along the no-limit Autobahn, we break down like always and decide it's pretty damned cool to possess any 911 Turbo S whatsoever.

Minis on Top tackles the Mt. Washington Auto Road, we tag along for the drive

This is a narrow road with two directions of traffic, no protective barriers and a long drop-off that sits uncomfortably close to your car's tires. Still, this a must-drive road.

VW Dakar support unlikely in 2012

Mini's chances of success on next year's Dakar Rally appear to have taken a step forward with speculation that Volkswagen will not contest the South American marathon in a private capacity. The Race Touareg has won the last three rallies and had been expected to run in the 2012 event in the hands of a private team while retaining a similar level of technical expertise from the Hannover-based firm. But now it appears the appetite for a potential fourth win for the Touareg is diminishing in Germany as the company's World Rally Championship effort comes on line

Michigan Gets Hazard-ous

Week Two of 2011 Season 2′s NASCAR iRacing.com Class B Series is now in the books, as sim racers now start unloading and turning laps at Road America. In Week Two, drivers turned speeds over 170 mph in the Irish Hills at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in races topping 4,500 strength of field (sof) rating, higher than many of the races we saw last week at Homestead-Miami Speedway. One driver featuring in these high sof races was perennial Class B frontrunner Thomas Hazard, who dominated the field at MIS. Hazard only hit the 18 degrees of banking one time this week, but he made it count, starting 13th and leading 25 of 40 laps en route to victory. Hazard finished with only two incident points, and gained 284 Nascar iRacing [...]

FIA in new engine mapping clampdown

Formula 1 teams are to face a further clampdown on engine mapping use from this weekend's European Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned, with the FIA moving to eradicate special qualifying-only settings Ahead of the effective ban on the off-throttle use of blown diffusers from next month's British Grand Prix, motor racing's governing body has shown it is determined to prevent teams from using any form of clever engine use to help aerodynamic performance. In a note sent from F1 technical delegate Charlie Whiting to the teams, he made it clear that with immediate effect teams will no longer be allowed to change engine maps between qualifying and the race

Video: Caterham R300 Superlight tackles the Nrburgring

Caterham R300 Superlight at the Nrburgring
Caterham R300 Superlight at the Nürburgring - Click above to watch the video after the jump

Nothing punishes quite like the Nürburgring. Drive anything around its twisting, undulating ribbon of tarmac and you know the suspension is working overtime. But it's quite another matter to see it. Unfortunately, the suspensions on most cars are hidden beneath their bodywork - but not on a Caterham Seven.

The classic lightweight roadster has its wheels placed outboard, so when the suspension is in motion, you can see the whole car working, its cycle fenders bobbing up and down. And that's just what you'll see in the video after the jump.

The boys over at Bridge to Gantry - those lovers of everything Nordschleife - headed home to the Green Hell in an R300 Superlight. Not the most powerful car Caterham has ever made (in fact you'll see its 178hp engine maxing out around 125 mph flat-out) but its low, low curb weight, coupled to the expertise of the driver behind the wheel, more than makes up for it, as he passes hot hatches, a Porsche, a motorbike and even a Chevrolet Corvette - along with one car that got spit out the top of the second Karousel. Follow the jump to see for yourself.
